2026 European Junior Championships: Day 6 Recap - Hoek's 100m Free Gold Defense (2026)

The 2026 European Junior Swimming Championships have reached their climax, with the final day of action delivering thrilling races and memorable performances. The stage was set for a spectacular finale, and the swimmers certainly delivered.

One of the standout moments of the day was the boys' 100m backstroke final. The race was a nail-biter, with the top two swimmers separated by a mere 0.01 seconds. Neutral Athlete Mikhail Shcherbakov emerged victorious with a solid outing of 53.99, just 0.01 seconds ahead of Frenchman Nathan Muratory, who won the 200m back earlier in the meet. The bronze medal went to Chrissander Cerda of France, who clocked 54.52.

Shcherbakov's performance was particularly impressive, as he split 26.29/27.70 on his way to the 2nd-best time of his career and just the 2nd outing under the 54-second barrier. His personal best remains at 53.54, logged this past April.

In the girls' 100m backstroke, Spain's Irene Ciercoles and Romania's Daria-Mariuca Silisteanu battled it out for gold. Ciercoles emerged victorious with a time of 1:00.06, slicing 0.04 off her previous personal best of 1:00.10. Silisteanu, who won this event last year in 1:00.40 and claimed silver at the 2025 World Junior Championships in 1:00.02, had to settle for silver this time around.

The boys' 100m breaststroke final saw Evangelos Efaim Ntoumas of Greece claim gold with a time of 59.91, while Louis Hoffmann of Germany and Max Morgan of Great Britain took silver and bronze, respectively.

In the girls' 100m freestyle, the final results are yet to be determined, but the race promises to be a close one. The boys' 100m freestyle final is also eagerly anticipated, with the world junior record holder, David Popovici of Romania, expected to dominate.

The final day of the championships also featured the medley relays, with the girls' 4x100m medley relay and the boys' 4x100m medley relay concluding the meet. The excitement and intensity of the races continued to build, leaving spectators on the edge of their seats.

As the 2026 European Junior Swimming Championships drew to a close, the swimmers' performances and the close competition showcased the talent and potential of the next generation of swimmers. The championships served as a platform for these young athletes to shine and leave their mark on the sport.
